Devin Porter

Hi! My name is Devin Porter. I am a Catholic husband, a father of one (due in August ’23!), and the oldest of 8 siblings.

I’m a software engineer by trade, with a particular interest in cybersecurity. In my free time, I play a range of sports just for fun, disc golf and (currently) floor hockey being chief among them.

I also have intense interest in the thought, ideas, and study of many disciplines – religion, philosophy, theology, metaphysics, morality, ethics, biblical scholarship, history, apologetics, logic, and so on. Thankfully, the Catholic/Christian intellectual tradition is astoundingly rich in all of the above, leaving me plenty to dive into in that area alone!

While I think it far from necessary to hold any religious conviction in order to maintain the truth of the pro-life message, the above has led me to primarily take interest in the philosophical underpinnings of the pro-life and pro-choice positions.

Without writing an essay explaining all of it, I’ll sum up why I’ve decided that the specific battle B4B is fighting is the one I’d like to be a part of. It’s rather simple in the end – the pro-abortion position is both a symptom and cause of a Culture of Death – the culture which presently dominates our daily lives. Restoring a Culture of Life (which underlies the pro-life position) is the antidote to this chaotic idea, and the mission of Biking for Babies.

Now that might sound pretty harsh, but “Culture of Death” simply means that life (or existence) is seen as lacking infinite value and dignity. In this view, life has no value inherent to itself – rather, the experiences of life are valuable, but only insofar as they avoid suffering. Therefore, if someone is suffering, or we anticipate that they will suffer, we consider killing them (or assisting them in being killed) a mercy which we extend out of our superior moral or ethical goodness and knowledge. Our culture picks and chooses when to apply this principle, but we’re steadily buying into this absurdity more and more.

So as to reverse the tide, I’m partaking in this mission to call out and undermine this grave evil toward which we hurtle with reckless abandon. By the grace of God, I hope to help move the needle toward a culture which embraces the truth, beauty, and goodness of the dignity of life.
